EMPOWER HER 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (I-DAY) is a day to raise awareness, prevent, and eliminate violence against women and girls. The day is celebrated on November 25th, and is accompanied by a 16-day campaign of activism that ends on December 10th, Human Rights Day.

In respect to this Youth Chaperon Uganda in Partnership with the Youth Advisory Committee of the SRHR Alliance Uganda and other like-minded CSOs organized the Empower Her Dialogue in kabalagala as a commemoration of the international day of elimination of violence against women and Girls, with the aim of addressing the interconnected challenges faced by women and girls, bridge the gap between generations in the slum community.

The Dialogue focused on curbing the increasing rates of Sexual violence against women and girls, teenage pregnancies, child marriages, and mental health issues which have escalated from 24 % to 25% according to the UDHS2022. The events aimed to empower girls, young women, provide them with information, and create a safe and supportive environment for their well-being, Reporting and referral path ways in regards to SGBV. The objective of the “EmpowerHer” campaign is to raise awareness, advocate for policy changes, and promote improved access to SRHR Services by young women and girls. The campaign seeks to give young people a platform to discuss issues of SGBV through an intergenerational dialogue with community leaders, Law enforcers, parents and males in the community.

The dialogue gathered over 130 people that is 20 Men, 35 Women and 75 Youths, these included YAC members from SRHR Alliance Uganda, KCCA representatives from both KCCA Central offices and Makindye, Community leaders, likeminded Civil organizations, Mental health experts, Youth groups plus Women and girls from Kabalagala slums. key commitments: increased awareness on the impact of SGBV and harmful practices.
