Sensitization Sessions on the Bye-Law to End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancies in Ngwedo sub county Buliisa District

Objective: To raise awareness among community members, parents, local leaders, and educators about the newly enacted bye-law that aims to prevent child marriage and teenage pregnancies, thereby fostering a culture that values education and children’s rights.

Eight (8) sensitization sessions were held in Avogera, Ajigo, Muvule Nunda, uduk1 &2, kisomere, Ngwedo farm and Kasinyi reaching out to 572 participants in attendance. The community members appreciated the bylaw with 80% pledging to support its enforcement.

The community members also cited that there’s need for continuous sensitization and engagement with the youth to realize the success of the bye-law. The sessions also enhanced community engagement, with many individuals expressing willingness to report cases of child marriage and teenage pregnancies to local authorities.

Moreover, community leaders committed to advocating for the enforcement of the bye-law, resulting in stronger collaboration among local organizations and stakeholders in support of child protection initiatives.

These activities have not only achieved their immediate objectives but also laid the groundwork for continued advocacy and community involvement in promoting the rights and empowerment of girls in Ngwedo Sub-County and the broader Bunyoro sub-region. Key commitments that needs follow-up: Translation of the bye-law into two languages of Alur and Lugungu and dissemination to these communities
