Peer Learning Forum for Community Legal Volunteers

A two- day Peer learning forum at Bukenya Foundation motel which brought together 45 volunteers (women and men) from 16 communities of Luwero Nakaseke and Nakasongola districts.

With the aim of strengthening the collaboration and mechanisms that foster knowledge exchange among CLVs and duty bearers for the promotion of human rights in communities.

This training was aimed at strengthening mentorship, legal empowerment, and sustainability of the save for justice initiative

CLVs from different communities came together to:

share their work of helping communities understand their legal right through conducting community dialogues and sessions for the holiday makers.

Sharing the strategies they use in mobilizing people to attend these sessions.

Supporting survivors of violence through working with schools and local leaders to help the people.

The Luwero District Probation Officer- Martha Butono addressed the volunteers, shared her role in the fight against GBV especially minors and communities when it comes to legal literacy and access to justice. She shared that she had just come from court, where she represented a young girl, a victim of defilement/incest case.

Police officer Muhammud Abdallah, from the Child, Family and Protection Unit at Luwero Police Station, spoke to the community legal volunteers about the referral system, which involves directing cases to the police, hospitals, and probation officers.

Dr. Habib Hussein, a Health worker from the emergency unit at Luwero Hospital, addressed the issue of sexual violence and outlined procedures for supporting survivors of sexual abuse. He emphasized the importance of encouraging the use of PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) and PrEP (Pre- Exposure Prophylaxis). Dr. Husein furthermore advised that victims of rape and defilement should be brought to hospital for medical examination before washing their private parts or changing underwear, as this helps preserve crucial evidence and ensure proper medical care.
